The Bluff solar project in regional South Australia presented significant engineering challenges due to steep slopes, exposed bedrock, and limited site access. Despite this, the project was delivered on time through the combined efforts of Photon Energy and their experienced installers, supported by S-Rack’s customised mounting system.
Engineering response to terrain constraints
The site’s terrain ruled out standard piling approaches. GAYK piling rigs were used to install substructures across uneven and rocky ground without the need for blasting or trenching. The mounting solution was adapted in several ways to suit these conditions:
- Custom pile depths and layouts based on site-specific geotech
- Hot-dip galvanised steel to withstand exposed environmental conditions
- Reduced component count for efficient handling and installation
- Structural tolerance designs to accommodate surface variability
Designed for durability
The Bluff site experiences high wind loads and varied soil integrity. The mounting system was engineered to maintain structural integrity under these pressures while supporting a smooth installation process in remote terrain.
Site suitability matters
This project demonstrates the need for racking solutions that respond to ground conditions rather than assume idealised flat, accessible sites. Structural system adaptability was a key factor in the project’s successful execution.
